SOZEN SAUNAS,
Canadian red or yellow cedar inside. Thermo-mahogany outside, heat-treated in a vacuum kiln. The only saunas in Indonesia made this way.
Two specialists.
One place for hot and cold.
Sozen builds the saunas, Kaido the ice baths: two specialists, each focused on its own craft, stronger for working together.
As Sozen’s exclusive retail partner in Bali, Kaido brings you both, looking after you from the first visit to the care plan.

The top grade,
from Canada.
- Inside
- Canadian red or yellow cedar, clear grade, the top grade: no knots, untreated and fully natural. Red cedar has a rich, warm scent, the one you would expect inside a Canadian lodge; yellow cedar a softer, earthier one
- Outside
- Thermo-mahogany, clear grade: a harder-wearing wood, heat-treated at 180–200°C in a vacuum kiln, no chemicals
- Worth it
- On average, clear red cedar is twice the price of knotty red cedar, the lower grade: $8–12 a square foot, against $4–6
- Walls
- 40 mm, on a galvanised steel frame
- Heater
- Harvia, from Finland, sized to the room
Cedar against
sungkai.
Sungkai is what many saunas in Indonesia use inside. Each figure is on average, for dried wood and a 40 mm wall.
| Red cedar | Yellow cedar | Sungkai | |
|---|---|---|---|
| WeightLighter wood has more air in it: cooler to sit on, and it warms up sooner | 380 kg/m³: 41% lighter than sungkai | 490 kg/m³: 23% lighter | 640 kg/m³ |
| Heat lost through the wallsLess heat lost: the room warms sooner and the heater works less | 40% less than sungkai | 21% less than sungkai | The most |
| Wood to warm upIn each m² of wall | 15 kg | 20 kg | 26 kg |
| Durability classHow long the wood lasts above the ground, out in the weather. Class 1 is the top | Class 2, durable: 15–40 years | Class 1, very durable: over 40 years | Moderately durable (class 3 of Indonesia’s 5) |
| Treated | Not at all: fully natural | Not at all: fully natural | Usually, for damp |
Heats sooner
On average, 15 kg of red cedar or 20 kg of yellow in each m² of wall, against 26 kg of sungkai.
Costs less to run
The walls keep more heat in, so the heater works less.
Lasts longer
Yellow cedar is in the top durability class, red cedar in the next. Sungkai is rated only moderately durable.
Now the outside:
two finishes.
You have chosen the wood inside. For the outside, choose the finish. Both are real wood, the same hard-wearing mahogany underneath.
Charcoal black
The outside scorched black, the grain still in it.

Red mahogany
A warm reddish brown that keeps the look of the wood.
Either finish goes with either cedar inside. Next: why the outside wood is different, and how it is made.
The only saunas in Indonesia
made this way.
The outside takes the rain and the sun, so it is not cedar: it is clear-grade mahogany, a harder-wearing wood, made this way. Most makers dry wood in a normal kiln: hot air at 38–82°C. The outside of each board dries first, and pockets of water stay inside. That heat is too low to change the wood itself, so in Bali’s damp air it takes the water back: the wet pockets swell more than the rest, the board pulls against itself, and it can split. Sozen dries the mahogany evenly, then heat-treats it at 180–200°C in a vacuum kiln: 98–118°C hotter. At that heat the part of the wood that takes up water breaks down. With no air inside, the wood cannot catch fire; in a hot-air kiln, it would burn. The cedar inside needs none of it: it is left fully natural. Sozen is the only importer of this wood in Indonesia, and the only company here with the machine for this process.
98–118°C hotter
180–200°C, against a normal kiln’s 38–82°C. In a vacuum, so the wood cannot burn.
Stays straight
Less to crack, split or warp in the heat.
Up to half the water
No chemicals: heat-treated wood takes in up to half as much water from damp air.
